A blood glucose monitor for your iPhone gets US approval

ibgstar-phoneWe’ve come across a number of different devices that hook up to your mobile phone and give you details about your blood pressure, check out the monitor from Withings, which is generally regarded to be one of the best. However, there hasn’t really been an equivalent and effective gizmo created for measuring your blood glucose, for those living with diabetes who need to keep an eye on their blood sugar and insulin levels regularly.

Well now a new blood glucometer attachment for the iPhone and iPod Touch, called iBGStar, has received approval over in the US and is being sold in parts of Europe too. The attachment is very clever and uses the iPhone as an accurate visualisation tool to keep track of all kinds of stats, like glucose readings, insulin intake, food and exercise.

Although the attachment works well with the iPhone, it can be used independently from a mobile phone too to take readings and then the data can be sent to the iPhone once they’re both connected up again. This makes it ideal for those who don’t have an iPhone themselves and may share one with a friend or family member.

The attachment works in tandem with a dedicated app from iBGStar called Diabetes Manager, which gives you a really intuitive interface to work with, making it possible to fit iBGStar into your daily routine.

iBGStar isn’t just a personal monitoring system either, there’s a way to share all of your information with your GP too, giving people living with diabetes even more independence and allowing them to get the right care they need from a distance.

There’s no official word about when the iBGStar attachment and app will be available to regular users, but the website promises it’ll be coming soon.

Check out iBGStar for more information.
