KidsDental gets animated to teach children about dental health
We all know how important it is to keep our children healthy and to promote good practices, but sometimes it is difficult to communicate this properly, especially when it comes to children. Well fret no more. Orca Health has developed an iPad application that helps explain this to youngsters using the power of animation.
KidsDental teaches children about dental care by using Pixar style animation characters. The idea is that if children are having fun, they are more likely to listen to the advice being offered. The application teaches the basics of dental hygiene in four sections; Explore, Conditions, Learn and “My Teeth”. The explore section allows the children to explore the mouth and teeth with a 360 degree view.
Conditions uses animation and interactivity to teach users about cavities, early tooth loss, broken teeth, and gum disease. Learn engages the user by explaining the importance of eating healthily and how it impacts on the teeth. It also explains how to brush and floss correctly by using the iPad’s screen to learn the correct method. The “My Teeth” section allows the child or parents to input events about teeth in a diary on the app. Some examples of events could be losing the first milk tooth and the app allows the upload of photographs about the event.
Orca Health founder Matt Berry said that the biggest test with creating apps for children is making them both fun and educational. “Children want to be engaged,” he said. “Making it fun and educational is a tricky balance.”
The application has already been a hit with orthodontist’s and dentist’s too who are utilising it at their practices to encourage better dental health. Our bet is this could be a big success. The animation element is simple but so effective. Anything that helps kids stay healthy has a thumbs up from us.
KidsDental is available on the iPad for £2.99
